Hammock Terms 


2-Point Hammock A hammmock suspended by two harnesses, one at each end of the hammock.
3-Point Hammock A hammmock suspended by three harnesses, one at one end and 2 at the other end of the hammock. This design provides a more sturdy with less sway than a 2-point hammock.
4-Point Hammock A hammmock suspended by four harnesses, 2 at each end of the hammock. This design provides the most sturdy hammock with no sway.
Brazilian Hammocks Brazilian hammocks are made from hand woven cotton , typically brightly colored designs and patterns. Many Brazilian hammocks are orenatly fringed. Because Brazilian hammocks are not vented like the Mayan or Nicaraguan hammocks they are better suited for cooler climates. They provide less cooling in the summer, but provide better warmth in the cold weather.
Cotton Rope Cotton Rope hammocks is the more comfortable than polyester rope hammocks but do not wear as well. Cotton rope also absorbes moisture which makes it more likely to mildew.
Hammock Bed The portion of the hammock in which the user lies or sits in.
Harness The attachment at the ends used to hand the hammock.
Hammock A Hanging, Swinging rope net or canvas suspended between to supports used for a chair or bed.
Mayan Hammocks Originating from Central America, Mayan hammocks are made of hand woven string. Mayan hammocks are typically brightly colored and do not have spreader bars. Mayan hammocks can be made from either cotton or polyester and are light weight and strong.
Olefin Rope Synthetic rope used in making rope hammocks. Olefin rope is abrasion resistant, colorfast, quick drying, strong, stain resistant, lightweight, and sunlight resistant.
Polyester Rope Althought polyester rope may not be as comfortable, it is more durable and less susceptible to mildew, humidity, and sunlight. Polyester rope hammocks are long lasting.
Rope Hammock Typically made from cotton or polyester rope, rope hammocks are the most traditional hammock and the most widely known. Rope hammocks typically have spreader bars.
Spreader Bars Typically made of wood, the spreader bars are located at the ends of the hammocks where the hammock bed and harness meet. The spreader bars help keep the hammock bed open to lie in as well as support weight.
